DyeStat preseason picks to qualify for NXN: Crater OR Jesuit OR
Current Prediction: Jesuit OR Crater OR
Notes: Bozeman MT surprised the running world in 2016 with peak performances from its entire team and claimed an NXN crown. This was not only the first championship or podium finish for Bozeman, it was the first time a team from the Northwest NOT from Washington brought home hardware. An NXN podium team from the Northwest is again a long shot, but as of late, it does not appear out of the question. Jesuit OR and Crater OR are both rounding into form and will be running for a championship at NXR Northwest with different approaches. Crater is beginning to run to its potential with a healthy low stick in Andy Monroe. The pick in the Northwest is 6A Oregon champion Jesuit, led by Josh Schumacher. Jesuit relies on a tight running pack and finished with a 20-second 1-5 split at state. The large regional field should help teams with strong fours and fives, and that favors Jesuit. Even though there are five Northwest teams ranked in the Dyestat Top 30, it does not appear likely that the region will have an at-large selection. It is always possible that a team can surprise and finish third right behind the top two teams in a region and claim one of the extra spots. Those likely candidates all hail from Washington in Lewis and Clark, Central Valley and Kamiakin. These teams are in virtual tie after the Washington state meet where they ran very similar races. Unranked Bozeman is still in the picture as well. Given their tremendous NXN race in 2016 and solid win at the Montana state meet in October, the Hawks could race to third in the region and snag one of the wild-card spots.

DyeStat preseason picks to qualify for NXN: Jesuit OR Sunset OR
Current Prediction: Bozeman MT Jesuit OR
Notes: The Northwest is one of the deepest regions in the country this fall. Bozeman MT led two Oregon teams (Sunset and Summit) at NXN in 2016, finishing a program-best eighth. However, it was Jesuit OR that started out the season as not only as the favorite in the Northwest, but a potential podium team at NXN. While that is still possible, it now seems more likely that Bozeman, led by Camila Noe, will lead the region. Jesuit has the best overall history in the Northwest at NXN, but the Crusaders have not competed at nationals since 2010. Sunset has been the stronger Oregon team the past two years. However, junior Ember Stratton, the 2016 NXN runner-up, has not raced since Sept. 30. She is not listed on this week's entry list. After the first two teams in the Northwest, there has been a constant back-and-forth battle among teams filling out the top five. Both Mountain View ID and Issaquah WA stumbled at their state meets, making the race for third in the region closer, but also making it less likely the region will be awarded an at-large bid. |
